We are looking for a local neighbor to help manage mini-farming at Our House.
It’s a role that should overlap significantly with your own interest and actions in farming and community-building as the purpose of farming at Our House is solely: building a community through learning about subsistence farming.
Any produce grown can be distributed at collective will and the emphasis is on learning and experimentation rather than produce production. There are collective resources for learning available -- including annual farm trips upstate (Soul Fire Farm, Wild Seed, and more!), the Farm School curriculum (www.farmschoolnyc.org), access to larger scale farmers, financial support for classes, and lived experiences -- however the thrust of the position is self-actualizing. There is a built-community around Farmy, just needs some organizing!
Responsibilities
- Hosting Farmy (Inviting others + community building; prepping task list; setup, attending, breakdown) -- 1st + 3rd Saturday mornings during each month March thru November
- Creating and enacting a plan for growing plants; tracking harvest production for ~300 sq feet of growing space
- Updating Farmy Blog + Google Calendar
- Working with and coordinating different stakeholders including property owners, collective members, chickeneers, beekeepers, composters, community members at large, local CSA and its members, and other cooperative house members
- Planning for and utilising a small provided budget line (available also to try our best to ensure safety from COVID for all participants)
- Teaching learning and learning teaching regarding growing edible things of sustenance and growing community
- Being actively anti-racist, anti-fascist, anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist and have your own independent relationship with the land and its living beings
- Spanish and/or Chinese speaking a plus
Hours: ~8-10 hours per month, starting ASAP thru November.
Schedule: 1st + 3rd Saturdays of the month, 9am-12pm. Flex time
Compensation: $200/month, produce grown distributed by collective will, other perks (fresh eggs/honey? Event space? Community Dinners? etc!) negotiable.
